Customizable car becoming a reality: Toyota announces FT-86

The Japan Times from January 28 writes that “Toyota pursues a new business model with customizable sports car”. Toyota engineer Tesuya Tada unveiled plans for the FT-86 that should hit the market in 2011.
No wonder it is a sports car that Toyota choses as a first attempt to have customers customize all but engine and car body. The Itasha usually is a sports car…

This is so going into the direction of the Itasha that Kawaguchi referenced as an example in one of his articles. Funny though that Tada rather pointed at the US market, where – as he said – car customization “was an established part of car culture”. Why isn’t he looking at Japan I wonder…Marketing?
